A Winter to Remember with EcoAdventures and an Exciting Spring and Summer Ahead!

EcoAdventures_Offerings_Banner.png

This winter, over 70 explorers answered the call of the wild, trekking through snow-covered forests on our Snowshoe the Grotto excursions and venturing into the night on our wildly popular Owl Prowls.  It was our busiest winter so far and Mother Nature did not disappoint - the snow, ice and owl sounds have been truly magical. Our experienced guide, Caeli Mazara, ensured these were fun and educational trips for all participants.

For those craving something truly unique, a new partnership with Parks Canada included the Yurt & Adventure Bundle - featuring a cozy overnight yurt stay at Cypress Lake with a guided Snowshoe the Grotto trek - an experience that brought guests closer to nature in every sense.

Behind the scenes, exciting things are happening too. A huge shoutout to our new Office Manager, Mia Toose, who worked alongside Caeli Mazara and the rest of the team to transform our website into a vibrant hub of inspiration. Visit MyEcoAdventures.ca to dive into the possibilities.

New Adventures for Summer 2026

The EcoAdventures journey continues with an inspiring new partnership at Cape Croker for the return of the Saugeen Sojourn, an overnight immersive adventure.

Picture yourself hiking along ancient landscapes, uncovering stories of geology, flora, and fauna, and deepening your understanding of environmental stewardshi, all guided through an Anishinaabe lens.

As the sun sets, gather around an open fire for a meal under the stars, then retreat to spacious canvas tents perched on new platforms near the Cape Croker Visitor Centre. This powerful experience has been brought to life with the leadership of Caley Patrick Nadjiwon Doran, whose vision and knowledge are woven throughout the journey.

A special friends-and-family preview adventure this May will help us fine-tune the experience ahead of summer 2026—keep an eye out for your chance to join at a special rate.

And in partnership with our Bayside Astronomers, we will be offering an Alien Escape adventure starting in May.  More details below.

Alien Escapes Start in May!

Alien_Escape_banner.jpg

If Escape Rooms are more to your liking, do we have a new challenge for you. Aliens have been discovered on the far side of the moon, and are threatening to destroy the earth, unless you can solve some space-based puzzles to prove humanity is worth saving.

In groups up to 6 (kids allowed), solve the puzzles using a telescope, planisphere etc. to gain stars and eventually build the constellation that houses the aliens. This is an early evening activity and depends on the weather, cloudy is fine but the aliens don't like the rain, their body chemistry is too different. Registration coming soon!

Investing in Water Quality Improvements on the Peninsula

Water_Quality_Field_Workers_banner.png

Recent funding approvals are enabling the Biosphere Association to continue to invest in water quality improvements on the Northern Bruce Peninsula under the Six Streams Initiative.

Septic System Replacements and Improvements

First, the Biosphere Association will continue to offer its septic system improvements program, addressing water quality issues related to failing or aging septic systems in the Six Streams watersheds on the NBP. Failing or inadequate septic systems may lead to leaching of nutrients and bacteria to groundwaters and surface waters, leading to contaminated aquifers, and algal blooms in rivers and nearshore coastal zones. The program will fund inspections, and provides replacement incentives for failing systems. Please reach out if you are interested in participating.

Cattle Watering System Enhancements and Repairs

Second, the Biosphere Association is undertaking an inventory of existing alternate cattle watering systems (AWS) on the NBP, to target repairs and improvements allowing for continued cattle exclusion from NBP watercourses

Over the past decade, the Biosphere Association has been committed to improvement of water quality on the NBP through these two programs. We have created a map that provides a visual representation of existing AWS and previous septic system program participation across the NBP. It also details the need for repairs of many AWS, which are planned for the 2026 field season. The map will inform water quality monitoring in the future and will help to understand the environmental impact of these local projects. Please email [email protected] if you would like a copy.

Great Turnout for Environmental Network Meeting on March 9, Hosted by BPBA

Representatives from 20 different environmentally focused organizations with involvement in the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula attended the March 9th Environmental Network Meeting. This included seven government agencies (federal, provincial and county) seven Land Trusts and six Not-for-Profits.

Attendees shared results achieved since the fall meeting and upcoming priorities identifying areas for collaboration. An example of synergy obtained is the collaboration by network members on common communication themes and an inventory of resources and publications from Environmental Network Members.

John Pedlar, a Research Scientist from the Canadian Forest Service of MNRF, was the guest speaker on "Assisted Migration" and shared the most current research related to the assisted migration of various  tree species. Copies of the presentation are available upon email request to [email protected].

Community Involvement with the BPBA

Community-Based Science on the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula

The Biosphere Association has a newly-funded four-year project (2025-2029) through Canada Water Agency’s Great Lakes Freshwater Ecosystem Initiative for Supporting Community-based Science titled “Engaging Citizens in Community-Based Science Data Collection and Stewardship on the Bruce Peninsula”.

The project will develop and implement a community-based water stewardship program on the NBP, beginning in the coastal and nearshore areas of Stokes Bay/Old Woman’s River and Judges Creek. The project will engage and train community members in generating high-quality community- based water monitoring and scientific data using standardized water testing kits distributed to citizens for use in monthly sampling. Educational, training, and data-sharing workshops will support this initiative to advance conservation, restoration and decision-making regarding priority Georgian Bay and Lake Huron environmental issues by way of increasing community-based science and data generation.

The goal is to empower citizens to understand how water quality impacts Lake Huron and our aquifer (the underground layer that yields our ground water). The more thorough the data set, the more useful the analysis and ultimate findings about NBP water quality. Citizens have an opportunity to help lay the groundwork for a Water Stewardship plan that will directly benefit our local environment over the long-term. A better understanding of local risks to water quality and protection strategies will also benefit all residents who value our peninsula wilderness, who engage in recreational water use, and who drink from wells.

More Community Involvement Opportunities

Upcoming opportunities for community involvement in Spring/Summer 2026: The Biosphere Association is excited to offer several opportunities for community members to be involved in our water quality improvement and data generating projects this year. Most dates are still TBD, so keep an eye on social media for updates.

Workshops: We have a number of upcoming workshops this Spring and Summer, including invasive species removal at the Biosphere Association’s Eastnor Swamp property, and techniques in community-based science.

Planting events: We will be hosting two native planting events at the Biosphere-owned Eastnor Swamp property this May and June. Exact dates TBD, but keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates!

Water quality sampling: If you reside around Stokes Bay or in the Judges Creek watershed, we are looking for volunteers to participate in our Canada Water Agency-funded community science program.
Volunteers will be given water testing kits for participation in our initial program year. Test kits will generate data on priority environmental issues, including (but not limited to) algal productivity, turbidity, and phosphorus in the coastal and nearshore zones of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

PADI Women's Dive Day Fundraiser

July 17 - 19, 2026 - This summer, the Biosphere Association in partnership with new scuba dive shop owners, Szilvia & Steve Mervyn of Dive Life Tobermory are proud to organize a fundraiser during the celebration of PADI Women’s Dive Day in Tobermory, Ontario — Ontario’s scuba diving capital and gateway to Fathom Five National Marine Park.

This three-day immersive event brings together certified female-identifying divers and community members for a special weekend of diving, citizen science, environmental learning, and a celebration of local women leading environmental stewardship.

With a goal to advance the BPBA’s mission to foster environmental stewardship, education, and sustainable development across the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula, funds raised will directly support local conservation initiatives while building a stronger connection between divers and the fragile nearshore ecosystems of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

While shipwrecks in this area are well known by divers, the ecological richness of Fathom Five’s nearshore waters — its freshwater mussels, unique fish species, aquatic plants, invertebrates, and geological history — remains under-recognized. This event bridges that gap through hands-on learning and underwater exploration.

This isn’t just for divers—everyone’s invited! Join us for a full weekend of activities open to the whole community. Stay tuned as details come together and new ways to participate, sponsor, and join the fun are announced.
